Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Pt. 1
I chose to use the excerpt from chapter 4 for Mr. Hyde, and the excerpt from chapter 3 for Dr. Jekyll. The characterization of Mr. Hyde is fairly easy, especially using this excerpt. He seems short, both in temper and stature. He is very rude even before the assault, and doesn't engage in the conversation with the other gentleman. The excerpt says that he all of sudden became angry and started to stomp his foot and his cane furiously. The other gentleman was of course surprised and hurt by this act, so he took a step back. Hyde is an angry man and has no control over what he does. It is also clear he is unstable, because at what was probably just an offensive remark, he killed a man. He flew off the hinges and beat the man to death with both his cane and stomped him to death. That boy crazy.

The characterization of Dr. Jekyll by the author is that he is a handsome, kind man. This excerpt in particular mentions his "stylish cast" but also him having "by every mark of capacity and kindness". The author makes him out to be this man of grandeur and wealth but as soon as Hyde was mentioned he lost all poise and seemed to get angry at Utterson for mentioning him. Jekyll knows he has done something wrong when he named Hyde as his beneficiary for the will and is scared that Utterson now knows of Hyde. Jekyll seems like a man with a secret that he doesn't want anyone to know and is deathly afraid of Utterson understanding.

Tired of your kindness

This poem was intended to show Hyde's temper and his secrecy. The intent is for the reader to see the connection between Jekyll and Hyde on "With my secrets too" and his own need to keep his problems to himself and hide the connection.

    Your compare and contrast paragraphs went straight to the point with good examples. They were accurate and very well analyzed! Your poem was really good, but you could've added another voice. Overall, I loved it! Great job!

    I liked the connection you made between Mr. Hyde’s short height and his short temper, do you think that Stevenson did this on purpose?I also liked your analysis of the quote for Dr. Jekyll. I think that it showed his character well. I thought you did a good job in the poem showing both perspectives but I am wondering how Hyde was hurt by words? Overall great post this week.

    I really like your analysis in part 1 of the two characters, it goes quite in depth. Make sure in the future to make clear your comparing and contrasting. I really love your poem. The internal conflict between Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is really reflected of the events in the text.

    Hey Michael, nice blog post! Your post was really interesting to me as I chose different excerpts, so it was cool to read another perspective. However, my favorite part was your poem. It was interesting to read a poem from Hyde's POV, and see how you developed his personality and inner thoughts/feelings. Your inner poet also shined through too!

When I first started to read the excerpts, I thought to myself that I’d probably be more alarmed at the fact that I woke up as a bug than Kafka described it. Maybe just me. The excerpts really didn't differ much at first glance, but once I got into them, I could see the differences. Diction #1- This sentence feels soft, almost like the alarm Samsa experienced wasn't really that jarring. It seems more like he found out, and it was just another Tuesday. The use of "uneasy" makes me think he was sick, and just having some weird dreams. #2- This sentence's use of "troubled dreams" makes me think that the dreams were of a negative or evil nature, that they were scary rather than odd. Don't Judge a Book By Its Cover

My first analysis has revealed some simple similarities and differences between the 4 covers. I'm going to use 1, 2, 3, and 4 to label the book titles, going across the top left to right and then across the bottom left to right. 1 is a girl sitting alone in what looks to be a garden. 2 is a boat floating on a shallow and desolate beach with some really odd coloring. 3 is a drawing of a human torso with organs visible. 4 is the faded image of a girl in bright blue clothes. 2 and 3 have very similar connotations, as in negative. I would also call them very gloomy. Their purpose is to give off an eerie feeling just by looking at the cover of the book. 1 and 3 go for something different, they definitely don't have the same feeling as 2 and 4.
